2009 is coming to a close and, in my quest for organization, I’m inspired by articles such as 10 things to Do Before the New Year (from Web Worker Daily).

Personally, I always do year-end organizing for my small business— it just feels right to start off the new year at least slightly more organized than you left the last one. My current routine includes the following….

  • Designing my 2010 Quick Peek Calendar to send to friends and clients.
  • Filing paperwork into project folders—or the recycle bin
  • Sorting and filing project samples—setting aside samples to enter into design competitions
  • Reconciling final bank statements
  • Filing financial statements and receipts—creating new folders for next year
  • Preparing and mailing client invoices
  • Paying bills
  • Cleaning up the email inbox
  • Assessing needs for office supplies or equipment could be purchased this year
  • Making end-of-year donations to my favorite nonprofit organizations

How are you spending the last few days of the year? Share your ideas!

Get a change of (office) scenery

It’s warm, it’s sunny and you’re finding yourself staring out the window of your office instead of working (and yes, I’m speaking from experience…). The solution: move your office to a “remote location” for the day. As we mentioned in our Tipsheet about working from home, working outside of your usual office environment can boost your motivation and creativity—especially on those warm summer days when you’d rather be out playing.

And don’t forget to shop local: visit the Delocator website to find an independently-owned coffee shop in your neighborhood.

Have fun while getting organized!

rhpadYesterday I attended an organizing workshop presented by my friend Elizabeth Lulu Miranda of Mercury Organizing Professionals and I now have a new favorite place: @Work Design. This new addition to Madison St. in Forest Park is a dream for anyone who appreciates a well-designed, functional and organized office or home. The stylish shop (naturally, owned by a graphic designer) stocks smartly-designed pads, folders and desk accessories, not to mention furniture.

Inspire yourself with a clever notepad (at right) or organize your office with fun(ctional) accessories. As organizer Elizabeth Lulu says, organizing your desk can help boost your business—and you might even find money in the process!
