2018 word for the year: streamline

Since 2014, I have picked one word to set the overall tone for the year ahead. My word for 2017 was PRIORITIES. I wanted to be better about staying on task in my business life (which also affects the priorities I’ve set for my family life).

How did I do with 2017’s word? Well, I know that I’ve been better about avoiding social media during the day (unless it’s work or client-related) and focusing on one project through completion instead of jumping around all day (for the most part…let’s be realistic here, I can’t totally change my creative brain!)

2018’s word is STREAMLINE. Over the course of last year, I’ve slowly gotten myself to this point. I’ve realized: I don’t need to be active on every single social media outlet. I don’t need to write every single blog post that pops into my head. I don’t need to reach out to every prospect that looks interesting.

And I finally admitted to myself that I need to streamline certain aspects of my business that take up a lot of time (time tracking, invoicing, accounting) and started taking approproate steps (I recently migrated to Harvest for time tracking and invoicing and it’s a major time saver.)

Now, I’m ready to move full force and create simpler and streamlined systems for all aspects of my business—both to be more productive during my workday and have more time for my family and personal projects.

What’s your word for 2018?

10-Minute Marketing: Choose a word for the year

Choose a word for the year

Starting back in 2014, I’ve chosen a word for the upcoming year. I learned this from Gretchen Rubin and I’ve found it to be a great way to set the tone for the year and stay focused on my goals.

This year’s word was REGROUP. After taking some time off to focus on my new baby last year, I wanted to regroup and get back to business this year—which I successfully did. (Stay tuned to hear my word for next year…)

This week’s 10-Minute Marketing task:

10-Minute Marketing: Make a list of this year’s accomplishments

10-Minute Marketing: Make a list of this year’s accomplishments

Now that 2016 is drawing to a close (whaaaat?) it’s a great time to reflect on what you’ve accomplished this year. We spend so much time focused on achieving our goals, so it’s nice to spend a little time basking in the glow of our accomplishments. And once you start writing it down, you will realize you’ve accomplished quite a lot.

You can do this is a few different ways. For example, I keep a running list of monthly highlights so that at the end of the year, I can review a few key areas of my business: client growth, sales growth and press/PR highlights. These highlights also come in handy for my press mentions, website copy and content marketing. I also recently made a list of my accomplishments related to the yearly goal I made in my accountability group.

However you do this exercise, I think you will be pleasantly surprised at the end. Feel free to share here or on my Facebook page so we can all cheer you on!

10-Minute Marketing: Make your “Top 3” to-do list

10-Minute Marketing: Make your “Top 3” to-do list

I’m a major list maker. I love making to-do lists and I especially love checking things off my to-do lists. However, because of my creative, spontaneous brain, I tend to make my to-do lists very long and detailed (don’t even ask how many side projects I’m working on). This can cause me to lose sight of the more important tasks.

That’s why I start each day with a “Top 3” to-do list: 3 things I must accomplish in that day. I jot these down on my calendar and refer to them when my creative brain starts to wander. BONUS: you are almost certain to check them off, i.e. get that great feeling of accomplishment!

Make your “Top 3” to-do list.

So, at the beginning of every year I make a list of things I want to learn. Apparently, I skipped 2012’s list—but I was already busy learning how to be a new mom! (see 2011’s list here).

Things I want to learn in 2013

  • How to create an eBook in Adobe InDesign
  • How to use Google Analytics effectively (admittedly, this has been on my list for several years!)
  • How to narrow down all of my personal creative projects
  • QuickBooks
  • Recipes for my slow cooker
  • Fitting in exercise into my biz mama schedule
  • A fun DIY holiday gift for friends
  • Sewing

What do you want to learn in 2013?
