How to make the most out of working with a graphic designer

8 ways to get the most out of your graphic designer

Having a graphic designer partner can make a huge difference for an organization. Since your branding is probably the first thing a potential client or partner notices about you, investing in a well-designed logo and other marketing materials is one of the keys to success.

I recently shared my top 8 tips for working with a graphic designer on the Keyword Marketing Blog:

  1. Let us know what your goals are for the project (aka the “who, what and why”): This includes WHO you are trying to reach, WHAT you are trying to accomplish, and WHY you chose this type of marketing piece. The more we know about your project and your goals, the better the end result will be.
  2. Send us copy that is complete and well-organized: This will cut down on the number of potential edits (saving you time and money). Let us know if you need referrals for a copywriter or editor. Or ask us for help editing your content to fit your message.
  3. Provide graphics that are high-resolution and in usable file formats: Please, no graphics pulled from the web! Also let us know of any potential copyright issues—if you are unsure about using an image, we can help you investigate or find appropriate images.
  4. Inform us of deadlines and crucial project milestones: It helps us create a working production schedule—and we are happy to keep you on track if necessary!
  5. Let us know how and where your project will be used: If you need print materials, a website, online advertising, social media profiles or graphics, promotional or staff apparel, etc., we want to know about it.
  6. Provide samples: If you have existing marketing materials or branding, please provide samples at the start of the project so we can keep everything consistent.
  7. Bring up any concerns as they arise: Please let us know as soon as possible of any concerns you have during the design process. Frequent and honest communication is appreciated and will help both of us stay on the same page.

  8. Bonus points – if you have Brand Guidelines, please send them: This helps us keep our designs on-brand (And if you don’t have brand guidelines, we are happy to create them for you)

Featured Biz Mama: Jill Anderson of Jill Lynn Design

Jill Anderson of Jill Lynn Design is that rare breed of designer and developer who partners with talented designers, copywriters, and agencies on their websites, and their client’s sites. Jill is passionate about crafting beautiful and innovative websites focused on clear positioning and positive user experiences. As a freelancer for over 12 years, she loves typography, code, and WordPress. She lives in the Atlanta suburbs and enjoys hanging out with her husband and 4-year-old son. And cat, Peanut, the chief paperweight. She tweets @JillLynnDesign.

I heard about Jill through a mutual friend and was impressed with her website (great advertising!) so I reached out to her and was pleased to learn she is a fellow mom of a boy.

Tell us a little about your business/job responsibilities.

As a freelance web designer/developer, I make websites for creative businesses including graphic designers, copywriters and agencies. My favorite thing to do is to take a design and make it come alive on the web.

What are the ages/genders of your children?

I have a 4 year old son, Quinn.

Did you start your business before or after having children?

I started my freelance design business before having Quinn. My first freelance project was in 2002. For the first 5 years, I ‘moonlighted’ while working a full-time job. In 2007, I made the plunge to full-time freelancing, and Quinn was born in 2009.

How did your business life change after having children?

It has changed tremendously! When I first started freelancing on the side, I worked nights + weekends since I had a full-time job. Yet, even when I transitioned to full-time freelancing, I didn’t really change my ways. I just worked more. I worked between 9-5 pm and nights + weekends because that’s what I was used to. My most productive times were at 10pm.

Then I had Quinn in 2009 and my life completely changed. I, personally, couldn’t keep late night hours. Strangely, I became a morning person. My most productive time is now at 10am.

Describe a typical workday.

After I drop Quinn off at preschool around 9am, I head to my home office where I design and build websites all day and drink coffee non-stop. The day ends around 5:30pm when it’s time to leave and pick up my kiddo. I try not to schedule any client work on Mondays as those are ‘Marketing Mondays’ and the day that I work on my blog, newsletter, social media, and overall content marketing. Plus it helps me get over the Monday Blues (I’m always sad when the weekend is over) and gear up for the week.

What is one tip you can share with other Biz Mamas?

It is okay to ask for help. You don’t have to do it all. My son started going to daycare when he was 6 months old because I am not the kind of person that can do 2 jobs well at the same time. I can’t be a web designer and mommy at the exact same moment and be good at both. I need to be 100% one or the other. And that works perfectly fine for my family.

Industy Insider: Ilise Benun of Marketing Mentor

Industry InsiderIlise Benun of Marketing Mentor is an author, consultant, speaker, founder of Marketing-Mentor.com and co-producer of CFC: the business conference for the creatively self-employed.

Through one-on-one mentoring, she provides practical guidance, accountability and a sounding board to creative professionals who are serious about growing their creative business. She also speaks internationally to trade groups and students. Her books include “The Designer’s Guide to Marketing and Pricing,” “Stop Pushing Me Around: A Workplace Guide for the Timid, Shy and Less Assertive,” “The Creative Professional’s Guide to Money.

Ilise has indeed been a marketing mentor for me. Several years ago, I attended one of her marketing webinars that helped me get more organized with my marketing. I met Ilise at the inaugural Creative Freelancer Conference in Chicago in 2008 and we have kept in touch ever since. Her advice and books have been a valuable resource as I grow my graphic design business.

Tell us a little about what you do/who you work with.

I specialize in working with self employed creative professionals and I help them get the clients they want at the fees they want to charge.

How has your past work experience influenced your current career?

I actually had very little work experience before I ventured out on my own, or was pushed actually, when I was fired from my second job out of college.  I started helping the creative types who surrounded me in NY and started simply by helping them get organized and get paid. From there it evolved into helping with marketing, pricing, proposals and any other  business issue that presents an obstacle to growing a business.

What is the favorite part of your workday?

I don’t think I have a favorite. Every day is different and I make my own schedule, which is what I like best. I start early and I tend not to work too late. I also take breaks for dog walks or just to clear my head.

What do like best about working with creative people?

Well, not all creative people are alike. Some are flaky and unreliable and don’t usually get far in business. I like working with creative people who are professional in their approach and open to bringing their creativity to the business side of their business.

Tell us about an exciting project you’re working on or have recently worked on.

The world is going digital and the future is interactive. So I just finished writing the 2013 Marketing Plan + Calendar to Get Interactive Work. It’s a simple plan for creative professionals that shows how to tailor your marketing to get the kind of work that is being required more and more: digital and interactive work.
