Recap: A to Z of Design blogging challenge

For the last 4 years, I’ve been participating in the Blogging from A to Z Challenge—a daily blogging challenge during the month of April.

Last year, I started a series called A to Z of Design (including basic design terminology for non-designers) but work/life got in the way and I never finished it. So this year, I restarted the series and I’m happy to say, I finished it!

Read the A to Z of Design and learn design basics—everything from A (alignment) to Z (zip)!

10-Minute Marketing: write a case study

10-Minute-Marketing: write a case studyI know some people avoid writing case studies, but personally I love them. They are a great way to document project details and results (trust me, you will eventually forget them otherwise) They help share your expertise and allow clients and prospects to see how you can help them.

Case studies should include client background, the challenge, your solution and results. They can be included in a marketing piece you send to prospects or added to your website or blog. See an example of one of my case studies on my blog.

This week’s 10-Minute Marketing task:

Write a case study for one of your projects.

TIP: keep your writing focused on the client, not yourself. See this article from Ed Gandia for super useful case study writing tips.

10-Minute Marketing is a weekly series featuring short, easy-to-accomplish marketing tasks. Follow along with past posts here.

Blogging mamas

In my recent research on blogging, I’ve discovered that many bloggers are also moms. This surprised and delighted me. It’s nice to feel like you have a connection with people you follow online.

Some of the blogging gals already had children when they started their blog, while others started their blogging careers while pregnant or after their first child. Now before you start thinking: they have it so easy, not having a “job” to go to every day. Many of the bloggers, I found out, work full-time on their blogs and care for their children, which isn’t an easy task.

Blogging, like other freelance careers, offers the flexibility to work on your own schedule—which is perfect for moms. But is also means long hours and hard work, which requires a a lot of planning and balance when you have a family. Now, I don’t plan to become a full-time blogger but I really admire the ones who are. Give them a shoutout next time you are on their blog!

Dogs who dig design

Essie: a set on flickr

I’m proud to announce that my office assistant Essie made it onto the HOW Design Blog!

Her passion for design is quite evident in the fact that she regularly naps in front of my stack of HOW Magazine back issues, not to mention her honest critiques of my design work (woof!! = yes, it’s very good. arrooo = nope, not quite there yet).

Though she was more than happy to model the sticker on the HOW Design blog, we hear dogs aren’t allowed at the HOW Design Conference in Denver (sorry, Essie). But maybe next year…
