Help spread your love of reading

openbooklogoDo you love to read? Can you spare an extra hour in your work schedule? Open Books needs you! The Chicago-based literacy nonprofit is seeking volunteers for their youth literacy program, Reading Buddies. Currently there are sites at elementary schools in West Town and Bucktown, more coming soon. Check out the Open Books Volunteer page for this and other ways to help kids (and adults) develop a love of reading.

Piles of unused books in your office or home? Clean off your desk and donate your books to Open Books. Not only will you get a warm fuzzy feeling, but a tax deduction to boot. Their bookstore and literacy center will be opening this fall in River North.

Pitch in and help a budding artist

pencilsHere at the bright spot, we love to talk about local organizations that are doing good for the community—especially ones that we support. Creative Pitch collects donations of paper and art supplies from companies and individuals and distributes them to local teachers in need. (see what they need here) I’ve donated materials to Creative Pitch for several years and it’s always heartwarming to receive “thank you” emails from grateful teachers and students.

You can also help them out by making a monetary donation—or for something a bit more lively, head over to the Creative Pitch Spring Fundraiser on Thursday at Lumen in the West Loop.

Being green and helping others

asparagusIt’s Green Week at the bright spot and (thanks to a recent Pivot Boutique newsletter) I just discovered a local organization that is doing good for people and the environment. Growing Home provides job training for homeless and low-income individuals in Chicago through agriculture. Participants ready themselves to re-enter the workplace by learning skills required for organic farming. The produce is sold at local farmers markets, including The Chicago Green City Market.

You can help support Growing Home by attending their 7th Annual Benefit on Thursday, June 11. In addition to a keynote address by Rick Bayless, there will be tastings from local favorites Charlie Trotters, Vie, Bistro Campagne and many more.
